Marc Ecko Gives Rutgers Commencement Speech

Rutgers' most famous dropout, fashion designer and graffiti art advocate Marc Ecko, is now a doctor, after receiving an honorary doctor of humane letters degree from university President Richard L. McCormick during the 243rd ceremony at Rutgers University.  Renowned fashion designer Marc Ecko who launched a clothing line from his apartment while a Rutgers student also delivered the keynote address. He urged the crowd to avoid fashionable cynicism and embrace change even when it seems naive.

Ecko, who attended his father's alma mater, the Rutgers College of Pharmacy, before leaving in 1993 to pursue his career in art and fashion, congratulated the graduates for "doing something I have never done — you are graduating."

His wife, Allison, whom he met while at Rutgers, also dropped out of college at the same time Ecko did to launch the clothing line, just 12 credits shy of graduating. When she heard he would be getting an honorary degree this year, she re-enrolled at Douglass College, completed her requirements and received her diploma during the Douglass convocation. Check out the Rutger's line Marc created to pay homage to his alma mater right here.
